Chapter 12

Cujo carefully cleared his mind of all the problems he was struggling with. Seemed like there was a lot of them, he thought wryly. His duties as head coach and chief of security. His concern about Olivia and the mate bond. His alarm at what might be happening to the women Jones took. The risks to the women this week as their wolves made their first appearance. The need to bring Olivia’s wolf over this week — tonight.

And then there were his memories and nightmares from his previous life. Odd, how just a year here made all of that feel surreal and foreign to him.

Having a mate bond was going to teach him mental discipline. Well, it wasn’t much different than his previous life — create a persona for the situation and live it. Be it. And here? A fitness coach and security chief who is falling in love with his client. No more worries than that. Just desire, and pleasure, and encouraging a magnificent woman to rejuvenate.

Well, he could be that. He hungered to be exactly that, and no more, actually. He felt a momentary pang of regret that he did have all those other pieces. Pieces he was determined that Olivia not ever know about.

When he was sure he had all those pieces tucked away from the surface of his mind, he knocked on Olivia’s cabin door.

“Come in,” she said. She turned to smile, but then the smile faded. “I thought....”

“Thought I was someone else?” he asked.

“Thought that you had walked away and turned me over to another,” she said.

“Just for your exercise this morning,” he said, puzzled. “Didn’t Carlos tell you?”

She nodded. “He did, but I thought....” She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “I thought it meant... rejection.”

Cujo struggled for a moment, then his wolf tapped the mate bond, and he felt her. Felt the hurt, and bewilderment, and abandonment. “Oh, Olivia,” he whispered, and he pulled her up tightly against him. She was stiff at first, but he held her until she relaxed against him.

“I’m sorry,” she said, her words muffled. “I know last night was just for now. I told myself not to care too much. That you wouldn’t stay forever. But when I thought you’d gone already, it hurt. More than I thought it would.”

“I am not leaving you,” he said firmly. “Count on it. I’m here. I will be here.” And that was truer than she knew.

She rubbed her cheek against his flannel shirt. “I don’t know why I feel so connected to you,” she said. “It scares me. Because you’re still 30, and I’m still 72. And that’s impossible. But I feel you. You’re right here. Then, today, I was alone — but not really. I could still feel that connection. It’s not like anything I’ve felt before.”

Cujo stroke her back, urging her to relax against him. “Ah, love,” he crooned. “I feel it too, don’t you know that? A bond between us that defies age difference and any other barriers.
